One of the most respected female neurosurgeons in Illinois or in the United States is Dr. Denise Crute, M.D., FACS. Crute works at the Illinois Neurological Institute—a Midwestern institution that specializes in research, clinical care, and education in neurological illness. Crute also serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford, Illinois, where Dr. Crute is lucky enough to interact with bright medical students. Dr. Crute’s specializes in the fields of neurotrauma, minimally invasive neurosurgery, and preventative medicine.

Dr. Denise Crute’s Curriculum Vitae reads like a top-ranking list of medical schools and institutions. She has attended Duke, the University of North Carolina, and trained at Northwestern University. She received a Bachelor’s of Science in Zoology from Duke University in 1983, graduating cum laude. She made the dean’s list and received class honors from 1981-1983, too. She then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, one of the United States’ top medical schools. She graduated from that venerable institution in 1988 and went on to do her neurological training at Northwestern University Hospitals.

Dr. Denise Crute is not just an academic, neurosurgeon, or professor—she is also a philanthropist and an artist. She has volunteered in Central America on several occasions. Crute has also published medical illustrations, most recently in a 2009 book called Heart of a Lion, Hands of a Woman, What Women Neurosurgeons Do.
